Books Reviews: Cat's Eye

A noblewoman, an assassin, and a soul-stealing necklace....

Sora planned on running away from her wedding, but she never expected to be kidnapped! Dumped into a world of magical races, arcane jewelry and forgotten lore, she finds herself at the mercy of a dangerous assassin, haunted by an even darker past. She yearns for freedom, but he won’t let her go—not when her Cat’s Eye necklace is the only thing that can save his life.

But the necklace itself presents a problem. It is an ancient device from the long forgotten War of the Races, and its magic has the ability to steal souls. Can Sora learn to wield its power—or will the power wield her? (Winner of the SKOW 2006 Best Fantasy Award)

REVIEW:
Though i was not big fan of the covers, the summary had a pretty decent sound and really hooked me so i couldn't say no. There was just something that made me really want to read it.

And god, i'm so happy i did. The writing is fast and clean. Easy to read, with not much but enough to create every single in your mind perfectly. I totally fell in love with the descriptions of places and people. The story is really intriguing too. Especially when you start reading. There is a mystery around the characters and around the plot, and the author teases you with small things all the time that you seriously can't get the book down before you are completely done with. Full of action and so alive, that sometimes it was like watching a movie running in from of my eyes.

At the same time, this was the problem too. I felt that i was away from Sora (our main heroine). I couldn't really connect with her. Everything goes so fast, and there aren't many bonding scenes in either that i couldn't completely get in her shoes. On the other hand, when we are from Crash's POV, you feel completely connected to him. It's like you are him.

All the characters are really likeable or at least respectably. Sora is innocent but on that completely stupid degree. No she is quite clever and she learns fast, but there are still moments where she has no idea what's happening and what to do. Which, it actually makes sense since she hasn't really traveled before.
Crash is perfect. You know pretty much nothing about him, even when you are in his mind his thoughts are so careful written that the mystery of who he is stays until the end. And despite the fact, he an assassin and cruel at times, he has something that make him stand out.
My love of the book was Dorian though. He is so funny, and it's like he is bringing a light to both the company and the story.

Cat's Eye is the start of a really original idea and story, with lots of action and excitement. I just finished it, and i only want to read it again. I can't see how i will be bored with it like ever.

Sora is having visions. Strange, terrifying visions brought on by her Cat's Eye necklace, an ancient and magical device. Spurred to action, she leaves her mother's cabin to find Crash, the mysterious assassin who once changed her life. She is certain that together, they can discover what the necklace is trying to tell her.

Crash is still on the run from the dark sorcerer, Volcrian, but now a plague is spreading across the land. Volcrian's quest for vengeance has awakened something far more evil than himself; a force that could destroy the entire kingdom. Together, he and Sora must harness the power of the Cat's Eye and kill the sorcerer before it's too late....

REVIEW:
Again not such a big fan of the cover, but i totally love the story so who cares really?

The writing is staying pretty much the same. The author using the same fast approach to event, which at the same time is good and bad. Difference is, that now we have more than 2 POVs in which give the story an entirely different feeling and actually feels the gap of the really few bonding scenes that exist. Still full of action, but this time the presence of romance is in the air. Something that i really loved, was how the author don't conclude on the "love story" from the first book. Instead its growing a little every time in every page, and always the "cat's eye" story is the important part.

There is no much change in Sora, except that she has grown and matured a little. She seems to have a little better understanding of the world. Still brave and cute as she was at the first book.
On the other hand Crash, changed a lot. The mystery around him is still there. I can only guess who he really is but at the same time i feel like i know him too well. His feelings and thoughts at his chapters are so strong, that it's easy to follow him around.
I prefer not to talk about the rest of characters because i will be spoiling facts from both this and the first book.

Again, i spend my time totally into the book. When it was over i simply wanted more. There is just something magical in those books, that keep me in from the very first page even though they are so small and don't seem so extraordinary.
