X-Men: First Class, Movie Review

X-Men: First Class, following the classic Marvel mythology, charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men.

REVIEW:
I have to say that even if i was excited about the movie from the trailer, when i saw the poor job that was done with the posters or the promotion i had doubts about the film. Surprisingly was much better, than both X-Men: Last Stand and and Wolverine films!

The story again was a little messed up (as far as i remember from the original stories) but as whole was better. I think it's bigger than the rest of X-Men movies and more serious. Still, they managed to make it light and really funny at moments (Wolverine guest stars!) with its strongest scenes in action. They had some references in to the previous movies or some of the X-Men future, so if you follow any of those you will grin or laugh a lot.

The acting was better as well. Even though there are only like 2-3 big names in. The only actor i didn't like was Jennifer Lawrence. Neither her acting or her as Mystique were convincing. Especially when you had the old Mystique to compare. Both James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender stoop up to their roles as Prof. X and Magneto, though.

Special effects were really great. It was difficult to get used to Frost's diamond self but she was okay. The music didn't match with the scenes at times, or at least that's what i felt. And there are many POVs in the film, which means you change places and atmosphere a lot. Something that took some time to get used to it.

Overall, was a great movie. Even though it was over 2 hours, i didn't get bored or wished to end. It kept me in from the first to the last scene and i can easily re-watch it, anytime. I believe the movie is also available in 3D, but for what i saw i don't believe it's worth it.

  1. Great review! We didn't notice the music, but we agree with a lot of the other things you said. Kristan loved the movie, mostly b/c her "Hollywood boyfriend" (i.e., Michael Fassbender) did a fab job with his starring role, and Sarah thought it was pretty good, although she wished both Mystique and Emma Frost had been stronger characters in the story (as they were in the comics). Regardless, it's certainly an entertaining film, and like you, our expectations were met. :)

  2. @We Heart YA: I have to agree with the Frost comment. She had much bigger part in the original stories. Unfortunately, the only thing i remember about Mystique is that she had taken Rogue to her care.
    But it was good anyway.

  3. Whew! SO happy to hear this movie is better than the previous two (X3 and Wolverine). I was starting to lose faith in this franchise, which is a shame because I love the world.

LOL, and what is up with those silhouette movie posters with the giant heads in their crotches???

  5. The film opens with the same scene that opened the first film, introducing us to Erik Lehnsherr as he's separated from his mother at a Nazi prison camp. These first scenes, particularly Erik meeting his mortal enemy Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon), are surprisingly effective.

  8. generally i liked it a lot, i enjoyed the movie and the action scenes, the performances were good too, i didn't like that much the ending, it was a little bit odd..the "bad guy" died to easy and then all the X-men became a team..as for the too sides Magneto and the Professor it didn't make sense..the only character i didn't like that much was the Professor..
