Che Committed Suicide : Review

About: Since the night Inspector Haritos had the brilliant idea to offer his chest as a shield in order to save Elena Kousta from a bullet fired by her stepson, his life has changed radically. Haritos' long convalescence has given his wife the opportunity to take control and, now, subdued and tamed, he witnesses a shocking suicide captured live on TV. The victim, Iason Favieros, a former revolutionary activist who had been jailed during the dictatorship of the Colonels, had built up a sprawling business empire in a surprisingly short period of time, including Olympic contracts. This tragedy is quickly followed by the suicides of a well-known Greek MP and a national journalist - at his own party. With the police and the press left groping in the dark, Inspector Haritos is under pressure to solve the mystery that is lurking behind this series of public suicides, unveiling the secrets buried in the victims' past.

Review: Petros Markaris is a Greek writer, but his books have been translated in many languages, he is one of my favorites, actually now i'm reading his book “the late-night news”. He writes detective novels. This book is his best for me so far, it's not like all the other detective novels that you already know the killer and you just wait to see what will happen. In this book you have absolutely no idea what is going on, you find out things when Inspector Haritos finds out ! It was one of the books that you can't stop reading, you have to know what will happen next. Also one other thing that you will probably like is that it describes the life in Athens as it is, you get a very clear and honest picture of what is going on. I really don't want to reveal anything from the story because in detective novels you must have no clue to enjoy it more ! So if you like this type of books you will love it, but you will find it a little different too and even if you don't read detective novels it's a great book to start with, Inspector Haritos is not a superhero he is an everyday police officer who you will love !

  1. I love detective novels ever since I read Agatha Christie's novels. I haven't read a Greek detective mystery. I will definitely check this one out.
    Thanks for the review!

  2. Nice review, I will definitely chech this one out soon. I haven't read anything by Markaris and it always excites me to read something from an unknown (to me) author.
One question though, do you think it's better to buy this in greek or english ? Is it easily available in both languages?

  3. @antonakis: i think since you have the choice u should read it in greek, because it's exectly how the author wrote it. You don't need to bother trying to find it in english.

  4. Great, I'm also a firm follower of the belief "if you can, always read it in its original language". I'm heading out in half an hour (hoping it's a long shopping saturday because of the christmas period) and I will ask for it in a bookshop.
