Crusade Review

For the past two years, Jenn has lived and trained at Spain’s Sacred Heart Academy Against the Cursed Ones. She is among the few who have pledged to defend humanity or die trying. But the vampires are gaining power, and the battle has only just begun.
Forced to return home after death takes a member of her family, Jenn discovers that San Francisco is now a vampire strong-hold. As a lone hunter apart from her team, Jenn is isolated — and at risk. She craves the company of her fighting partner, Antonio: his protection, his reassurance, his touch. But a relationship with Antonio comes with its own dangers, and the more they share of themselves, the more Jenn stands to lose.
Then Jenn is betrayed by one who was once bound to protect her, causing her to doubt all she had held as true. To survive, Jenn must find the courage to trust herself — and her heart.

REVIEW:
Seriously can you say "no" to a book with a cover like that? It's fantastic! I know the we must not judge a book by its cover, but this one is really good. And lucky me, the book was the same good as it.

Now, imagine our world in a war. A war with the vampires. They are actually the controllers of the world and there are not much we can do to get free. They pass their lies to us so good, that your friends love them and wanna date them, your parents are either too blind to see the truth or either too afraid to admit that something was wrong. Even your family, will betray you just to feel safe for a while. Pretty bad, huh? But as always, the resistance exists. Hunters or simple people who try to get free again and hunt vampires. That's our story pretty much. Our main character is Jenn, a simple girl who just couldn't stand the lies around her and left to became a hunter. Now, after two years away has to go back to her family....and that doesn't turn out really good.

While our main character is Jenn, we actually see the story of all the characters in the book. At least most of them. You even get to see the background of one of the bad vampires. How she turned, what her plans are, etc. Along with Jenn is the rest team of the hunters: Antonio (who is the only good vampire so far, though he was a priest and the love story with Jenn is weird :p), Eriko (who is the Hunter, the best of her year - also drunk a bottle which gave her powers), Skye ( our little witch), Holger (our werewolf -i love that guy!), Jamie ( the guy who was training to hunt werewolves and vampires from a young age - he really wants to kill Antonio and Holger) and Father Juan ( the leader of the school and all.). As you see everyone is so different from each other. Same for their stories, the way they think, their actions, their characters. And you will get to know all of them in the book (backgrounds, fears, etc). The book is pretty big as you can imagine since you get to see so many of the story.

As for the writing and style? Amazing. It's really dark, well written and captivating. You are so into it, that when you stop you still have the images of that different world in your head. Thinking what you will do, if the world was like that?

I really loved the book. The characters were so well introduced and described. Same for the story and the environment. I don't believe it lacks something. It was one of the best this year. And surely can make you afraid of vampires once again.

  1. Great review and an interesting cover... but the blurb, and then the plot and characters (according to your review) hit all my sensitive spots about all the latest cliches. No matter how enticing that cover is, I think I will pass this.

  3. @Antonakis: Hmm..i wouldn't say there are as much as cliches as we are used to with the latest vampire books. It has its originality in a way.

@Misha: oh yeah yeah! too dark :D

  6. Oh My God!! A book where vampires are bad!! How often we see something like that....
Anyway, I agree with Athanasia, I would never read the summary of this one, but as we learned from previous situations, we should never judge a book by its cover....
By the way, this review was really great Yiota (sorry Johnny and Athanasia, that doesn't mean that your reviews are not great too).

  9. I tend to be a cover judger and I loved the cover and the book! The characters totally make it a great one to read, for Holgar and Jamie's interactions alone :P

  10. i just finished reading the book and i have mixed feelings.. Firstly i didn't like Jenn and Antonio. They managed to make it sound even more sicker than it is to drink blood. Antonio drinking from Father Juan, it was disgusting and sick. I don't know why it made me feel that way. as for the writing style, it wasn't dark at all... it was tiring some times when they repeted things about the characters, or the life now with vampires. also the ending was very disappointing.. nothing ended. maybe they want a sequel i don't know... Generally i liked the story, it had action, it was good but there were also some things that i didn't like. Oh did you notice that the writers kept using some words?? jerked, whizing, hissing...!
