Have a mentioned that i'm a sucker for Atlantis related stories? No? Well you know now. Atlantis by David Gibbins is the 2nd novel i read regarding Atlantis (first was The Hunt For Atlantis ).
The book starts with a scene of Solon back in the ancient times when he learned about Atlantis then goes back in our time and straight into the point....and now i blacked out.... I'm not really sure how i could describe the writing or even the feelings about my book...I should try a list review or something.
>The fact that David Gibbins is an archeologist make the history facts and well..everything he says more accurate and more well researched. Need to be said that obviously most of the parts are fictional but i like how at the end clarifies what was his ideas and what was real. They are like 5 pages at the end of the book where he states everything and you also get a history lesson. Of course the fact that he knows so much of history isn't entirely good. There are some points where it's more like you read a history book than a novel. I could say it tired my at some parts and i stopped for a break.
>When is too much? At start (about the first 1/3 of the book), the plot is really intriguing and you are reading non-stop but after that something goes wrong. The details are much more and sometimes i would forget things, it's also stops being so thrilling and mysterious and you are more "let's end this". Also, i understand Atlantis how is a mysterious place, probably connected civilizations and many history events but at the point where the whole ancient history was changed and the city of Atlantis had like EVERYTHING in, it was like the story was overload and was written just to make an impression than anything else.
>No character development. No character connection. You are an observer and you barely get an inside of any character's head, feeling or whatsoever. I felt away from them and as i said it was more like a history book.
>David Gibbins tries to create romance for his main character. It was bad. Really bad. Better not to existed at all. We had the main guy, meets hot clever girl, they are a week together and barely talk for anything other than archeology, have sex at beach and next say they have created bond that nothing can break it. And that's it.
>And lastly, the action scenes didn't make me excited at all. Maybe the fact that the whole history thing tired me, made my not enjoy them as much but i can't say they stand out for me. I can barely remember them actually.
See, it's not i disliked the book, just i disliked the biggest part of it. I totally enjoyed the first 1/3 and parts now and there but most of it left a negative taste. It's mostly what you expect of it, i believe and personal taste and not is a bad book.
