This debut, the first novel in a trilogy, is achingly romantic, terrifying, and filled with blistering action.
When seventeen-year-old Ellie starts seeing reapers - monstrous
creatures who devour humans and send their souls to Hell - she finds
herself on the front lines of a supernatural war between archangels and
the Fallen and faced with the possible destruction of her soul.
A mysterious boy named Will reveals she is the reincarnation of an
ancient warrior, the only one capable of wielding swords of angelfire to
fight the reapers, and he is an immortal sworn to protect her in
battle. Now that Ellie's powers have been awakened, a powerful reaper
called Bastian has come forward to challenge her. He has employed a
fierce assassin to eliminate her - an assassin who has already killed
her once.
While balancing her dwindling social life and reaper-hunting duties,
she and Will discover Bastian is searching for a dormant creature
believed to be a true soul reaper. Bastian plans to use this weapon to
ignite the End of Days and to destroy Ellie's soul, ending her rebirth
cycle forever. Now, she must face an army of Bastian's most frightening
reapers, prevent the soul reaper from consuming her soul, and uncover
the secrets of her past lives - including truths that may be too
frightening to remember.
REVIEW:
My first debut 2011 novel! Yay! Let's skip the happiness and get to the review though.
I will describe the book with one word "balanced". I really liked the writing. The descriptions of characters, places and situations were really good, getting in me in the book and making me feel the excitement of the scenes.
Bad things: The story kind remind me of Bleach (that's a manga story going on for 10 years for those who don't know). The whole killing creatures which hunting souls and stuff, it was like copy-paste of it. I was just waiting to see the word "shinigami" pop from a page XD Then we had the angels story which we see really often in books lately.Nothing interesting in there. Vampire and Angels are trend nowdays. We have the usual super special heroine, with secrets at her past and legacy. Of course there is a boy, love story, forbidden of course.
Good Things: Our heroine is not crying all the time, helpless and whining of how bad her life is and blah blah. She is reasonable and good thinker. Not stupid with her actions. Our guy, has the dark style-not talking much, but he is a good guy, no sadist, not doing dangerous and weird stuff, no dark secrets. He is pretty much a good guy! o.o And it's not a book about a love story and how will end. It has some serious action in. Half book is action scenes which i totally loved. Surprise surprise: no triangle available! how unbelievable is that huh? :o Heroine's friends are normal people, hanging out, flirting, helping each other. No bitches or selfish or stupid, you know what i mean.
Angelfire was a YA cliche-but-with-some-good-surprises book. I'm totally into it and can't wait to get the next one.
