Darkness Becomes Her Review

Ari can’t help feeling lost and alone. With teal eyes and freakish silver hair that can’t be changed or destroyed, Ari has always stood out. And after growing up in foster care, she longs for some understanding of where she came from and who she is. Her search for answers uncovers just one message from her long dead mother: Run. Ari can sense that someone, or something, is getting closer than they should. But it’s impossible to protect herself when she doesn’t know what she’s running from or why she is being pursued.
She knows only one thing: she must return to her birthplace of New 2, the lush rebuilt city of New Orleans. Upon arriving, she discovers that New 2 is very...different. Here, Ari is seemingly normal. But every creature she encounters, no matter how deadly or horrifying, is afraid of her.
Ari won’t stop until she knows why. But some truths are too haunting, too terrifying, to ever be revealed.

REVIEW(small spoilers):

Second debut for me, but didn't turn out so well.

I will admit the writing was really good. The descriptions of the places were some of the best i've read. There so much in them, sometimes i even felt like i could hear the sounds and smell the places. So, yeah that's pretty nice! Also, the paranormal stuff at New Orleans were pretty cool as an idea.

Unfortunately that's all. Then disaster happened :/
-The most fast romance i've read. Ari and Bas getting together in less than 24 hours and they have barely change 30 sentences. I mean, wtf? That's just not possible.
-Loved the mystery of the story, but when it was over half the book and without not even one single answer to a small question, nothing to feed your mind and make some accusations, i got bored. It's nice that many things were not easy to get them but come on...we all love to have some small hint and discuss with ourselves "ohh..that would happen".
-Our heroine Ari, was a boring character. She didn't really have a purpose of life so lucky for her, shit happened and found a life. And even then, she was "nahhh" as a person.
-Why is it so bad for a vampire to drink blood? That's their nature! Okay, you can be mad at killing but drinking human blood it's normal. Don't make vampires lame. They are just not vampires like that! It's not cool -.-
-Finally, the Greek mythology. It was worse than Percy Jackson movie or Clash of the Titans. I wanted to hit my head somewhere. I don't get how they just get some things, half searched, and just throw them. And then, we decide to change the characters of the gods. We just don't put Athena to be a bitch, who killed Zeus to take his power, destroying the world..no never. Don't do that people. And many other things i saw in the book. Just don't. It's offensive. And why to use a Greek word to a book in English? How many of you, right now can read that "τέρας" and the only explanation you have is that means monster. Nothing more. I dare you to read it.

That from me. Avoid the book. I know, i'm not going on with the series even for free.

And no, i'm not in bad mood cause i was ill. :P Cause Demon King, which i also read at the same period was awesome!.

Thanks Simon & Shuester for providing an ARC.

  3. Oh wow. It sounds like all of those things would really bother me too. Athena did that? Athena??? Really? What a shame. At least I already wasn't planning on reading this book.

  5. Question: The word "τέρας" was written in greek, I mean, like, greek letters????
In Percy Jackson, there were greek words, but written in latin characters....

  6. @Yiota: what happened to free fantasy? :P jk

Personally i think that altering a race's mythology to that degree is a direct insult to the race (no im not going so far because it is the Greek mythology, i get pissed when they do it with Norse, Egyptian and any other mythology i have looked into). I know it might sound too much, but I believe that mythology is the very reflection of a race, it shows their beliefs, their ideals, their hopes and dreams. By altering it so much you are openly mocking the race itself

Dont get me wrong, i am all game with using and adding from many mythologies to someone story, but when you DO get aspects, at least have the decensy of being respectfull. That is my personal opinion, i am not trying to enforce it or anything.
