Game Of Thrones (Season 1), TV Series Review

Seven noble families fight for control of the mythical land of Westeros. Political and sexual intrigue abound. The primary families are the Stark, Lannister, and Baratheon families. Robert Baratheon, King of Westeros, asks his old friend Eddard Stark to serve as his chief advisor. Eddard, suspecting that his predecessor had been murdered, accepts so that he can investigate further. It turns out more than one family is plotting to take the throne. The Queen's family, the Lannisters, may be hatching an incestuous plot to take control. Across the sea, the last surviving members of the previously deposed ruling family, the Targaryens, are also plotting a return to power. The conflict between these families and others, including the Greyjoys, the Tullys, the Arryns, and the Tyrells, leads to war. Meanwhile, in the north, an ancient evil awakens. Amidst war and the political confusion, a brotherhood of misfits, The Night's Watch, is all that stands between the realms of men and the horrors beyond.

Most of you already watch the series or at least you have seen them around. It's actually impossible to miss them. They are everywhere. Anyway, i haven't read the books (neither i'm planning to) so the review it has no comparison with them.

Every episode it's like watching a movie. They are over 50 mins sometimes reaching 1+ hours. Special effects, music, acting, places...are all magnificent. You barely say that those are tv series and not a high budget movie. Well, don't imagine LOTR but you can see how much effort has been put in.

They say the series are for everyone. I say they are not. Not because it's fantasy. This has nothing to do with it actually. It's more of what it is as a story. If expect action, there is no much. Everything is political with backstabbing and lies and things like that. It barely has battle scenes of any kind. So people who are used to those things, might get bored after 5-6 episodes. The story is intriguing with mystery and such.

If you are bad names, you will also have problem. I'm good with names and i barely remember half the characters. They are way TOO many. I was annoyed by that. Why they have to be so many anyway?
Another big one is the sexual content. True Blood is nothing compare to it. Too much info people! They need to cut some! I forwarded all the sex scenes and they were many. Some didn't even make sense. Why when there is a character's monologue you need at the background two girls having sex? And he was talking and talking...i skipped the whole thing and i don't even know what the guy was telling and if it was important.
There is violence. Towards animals, people and whatever exist. There are some really bloody scenes.
Some of the relationships between the characters are disturbing (no i can't accept sister and brother having sex or later with her cousin or whatever the guy was).

Seems like it's full of negatives. It's not. It's a nice world, with nice ideas (it also has dragons) about people and their traditions but at some points it was overdone (either cause of the story or cause of the producers).
The cast is nicely picked. With Sean Bean one of my favorites.
The show has such big audience that signed for 2nd season after the 1st or 2nd episode.

Worth mentioning: The opening. It's one of the most beautiful openings i've ever seen.

Cast: Sean Bean (Lord Of The Rings), Lena Headey (Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles), Michelle Fairley (Harry Potter 7), Iain Glen (Tomb Raider, Resident Evil 2-3), Alfie Allen (Atonement), Peter Dinklage (The Chronicles of Narnia 2), Ron Donachie (Titanic) , Jason Mamoa (Stargate Atlantis), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Kingdom Of Heavens), Julian Glover (Harry Potter 2, Star Wars), Mark Addy (A Knight's Tale), Ian McElhinney (City of Ember), Harry Lloyd (David Coperfield), James Cosmo (Braveheart, Chronicles of Narnia 1), Charles Dance (Alien 3), Owen Teale (The Last Legion), Natalia Tena (Harry Potter 5,6,7), Peter Vaughan (Straw Dogs), David Bradley ( Harry Potter Series)
Rest cast (yes there are many more!) is unknown.

  1. Sean Bean is amazing! I love this show!! Have you read the book? It's as wonderful!

  2. Aw, why do they always have to go and add all kinds of unnecessary sex?? Thank you for the warning about not a lot of action. I can be ok with that, but I was expecting a lot of battles and I probably would have been disappointed.

  3. This series is one of my best medieval/fantasy drama series ever, maybe the best. In the beggining I liked Sean Bean, the northern lord role suits him perfectly and he was the most familiar face of the actor and after that storm of names and faces I needed a familiar face. But then he started failing again and again and my appreciasion for him reached the bottom...
I loved the "dancing" teacher of his daughter thought and the Khalisi :D

  4. @Misha: no i haven't. and i'm not really planning too. i hear good thing about the series but some things about the author, so i'm not really interested. if the actor doesn't care i don't know how i will like something he wrote.

@Small Review: no battles. maybe they will have some at 2nd season.

@Silvestro: Ned wasn't fail. He was just TOO honorable. As for the Khalisi i didn't really like her but i think it was cause of the actress. she was always looking so lost. I think their first choice should have been better: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamzin_Merchant

  5. The show was great. A good adaptation of the book. I have read the first five books of this series, and i was amazed how closely the first season followed the first book. Since i have read the books that follow i am looking forward to the seasons ahead. A must see for all fantasy lovers.

There is lot of spam lately at the posts, so for a while i will put up the comment moderation. Sorry for that, i really don't like it but i thought it might stop the spamming. It will be down soon enough! Thanks a lot :)
