City of Fallen Angels is the fourth book in the bestselling series The Mortal Instruments.
“City of Fallen Angels takes place two months after the events of
City of Glass. In it, a mysterious someone’s killing the Shadowhunters
who used to be in Valentine’s Circle and displaying their bodies around
New York City in a manner designed to provoke hostility between
Downworlders and Shadowhunters, leaving tensions running high in the
city and disrupting Clary’s plan to lead as normal a life as she can —
training to be a Shadowhunter, and pursuing her relationship with Jace.
As Jace and Clary delve into the issue of the murdered Shadowhunters,
they discover a mystery that has deeply personal consequences for them —
consequences that may strengthen their relationship, or rip it apart
forever. Meanwhile, internecine warfare among vampires is tearing the
Downworld community apart, and only Simon — the Daylighter who everyone
wants on their side — can decide the outcome; too bad he wants nothing
to do with Downworld politics. Love, blood, betrayal and revenge: the
stakes are higher than ever in City of Fallen Angels.”
REVIEW:
If you are a real hardcore fan of the series you might don't want to go on with the review. Just saying...not everything will be praise :P
I literally just finished the book. I've read many reviews about it and i saw things like "brilliant" or "the best book of the series", etc. I do have mix feelings about it.
Let's start with what i really like. There is no argument for me that Cassandra Clare knows how to get you not let her books down til you finished. For another time, i really enjoyed her writing. Fast and with action, romance, mystery. It took me in. For once again i was in her world and i could see everything through her descriptions. I never had doubts of what was going on or what i was seeing. She knows her characters and she knows what she writes and i could feel that.
She choose to pick Simon as her main characters and i was more than happy about it. I really like him and i finally got a glimpse of his life and thoughts. I also get to know more all of the rest characters. There POVs for almost all of them and i loved it! Finally, i know them better.
But unfortunately, there were some things that "annoy" me. I will start with Clary. I felt as she had lost some of her power and her strong character. Was she always crying that much? I wasn't connected to her as before.
As much as i loved the many POVs, i couldn't stand the amount of love stories-triangles in it. I was tired to read about romance so much.I wanted more action. There were so many things happenings and the romance was like a shadow over them.. All of them felt alike and for some reason i could see through them.
I pretty much hated all the scenes with Jace and Clary. Sounds weird eh? Their story was really good at the previous three books and i felt like it was the time to be done with it. All this struggle, the fights, the make up, the almost-sex scenes were repeating though the story and it crossed my mind that after some point they exist for fan-service only. I might enjoyed some scenes..there were pretty damn hot but...
Lastly, it was the main plot-story. The previous books had an originality in them. I couldn't see it now. Lilith, angels, vampires, etc are subject that exist in almost every other YA book out there. They are used so many times, that it's difficult to surprise someone with them. Indeed, at the first books were all there too but they were different! Now i couldn't see that :( Maybe it's cause i've read more books..dunno really.
Conclusion? I liked it and I will go on reading the next ones but i wish it had stopped at the 3rd book. It felt better.

I just bought the first one....Don't know when I'm going to read it, though....
ReplyDeleteA great review. After reading it I know that I'll enjoy it cuz I love really into romance LOL (:
ReplyDeleteGreat Review!!!
ReplyDeleteOMG!!! It was not just me. I also wish she stopped at book3. I admit, who doesn't want more books, but book 3 felt complete, finished, and 200+ into I liked it but it does not compare to the first three books. and I can't stand Jace right now. I mean Clary/Jace's POV are like meh. I hope this changes more into the book.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my review :-) - I'm with you, it's not that the writing itself is bad, it's well written, but the content of the story was a let-down for me. I'll still keep reading, but I'm not as excited about the continuation of this series as I once was.
